Starting out on the Boston Music scene Powerman 5000 quickly became a force to be feared. Starting out with founding members Spider One (Vocals) and Al 3 (Drums) who quickly became friend and band mates after they realized they both had the same tastes in music, ranging from Black Sabbath to Public Enemy. Soon after they formed Powerman 5000 with the addition of Dorian (Bass), Adam12 (guitar), and Jordan (Percussion). After the bands 1997 release Mega!! Kung Fu Radio, Jordan left the band and M33 joined on guitar.
Playing small shows around their home town they quickly grew a strong following and began playing packed club shows all around the New England area. The touring and the following caught the attention of an inde label, Curve of the Earth Records, which quickly signed them. In October of 1994, for a cost of $600 dollars, the band recorded their first EP True Force. It was a Local Hit and earned the band the attention of several big record companies.
Rather than making the jump to a big company Powerman 5000 decided to pass on the deals and master their instruments and fine tune their sound. At that time in their lives they cared more about touring and song writing than about becoming a huge success, they wanted to become the best band they could before that happened. The result of their waiting and hard work was full length album The Blood Splat Rating System. The album went on to win Best Metal Album, Best Rap Album and Best Album of the Year nods in the Boston Phoenix Readers Poll, as well as legions of new followers.
Once again the offers from the big companies came in, and this time the band was ready for them. After all the offers PM5K decided to go with DreamWorks Records. Their first Major Label release was 1997s Mega!! Kung Fu Radio, which was a Re-Organizized Blood Splat Rating System. It included remixed and remasted versions of the songs, as well as two new tracks, The title track, Mega!! Kung Fu Radio, and the hidden bonus track file under action.
Later on in 1997 Powerman 5000 set off on a year long cross country tour with such acts as Korn, Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson, Primus, Pantera, Danzig and Coal Chamber. The band also became a regular at the annual OzzFest hosted by Ozzy Osbourne. They also did an appearance on Late Night with Conan O' Brien and filmed two videos for Tokyo Vigilante No. 1 and Organizized.
In late 1998 The band returned to the studio and began writing and recording tracks for a new album. In the summer of 1999 Tonight the Stars REVOLT! was released. It had influences from many things from Author Arthur C. Clarke - Flash Gordon - a mysterious author named J.P. Saticoy that Spider discovered from an old book. The book is the only writing Spider could find anywhere that had anything to do with the author. Spider was so inspired by the Book that the opening track on Tonight the Stars Revolt! is taken straight from the book.
Today, everybody's trying so hard to keep it real, Spider laments. That puts me to sleep. I say, Lets keep it unreal. Powerman 5000: keepin it unreal! Now that's more like it.
